The very first step to start an affiliate marketing business is choosing a profitable niche. Some people waste a lot of time on specific niche until they find out that niche is not making money at all.
The worst part is, they already spend a lot of money to build a website, buying a product to review and tools to boost their business, but at the end, they are making no profit because no one interested in the niche they are working on.
You wouldn’t want that happens to you, right? Imagine you’ll spend 1 to 2 years in making a website, create a content and worship whole of your time solely in 1 niche, at the end you notice NO ONE BUYS your product. You thought after spending 1 or 2 years on the specific niche will make you a living forever, but at the end, you’ve failed.
So, I write this article to give clear direction on picking the best niche that worth your time.
4 Steps To Choose A Profitable Niche
Every successful business start with 1 specific niche including affiliate marketing business. But, how to choose a good niche to start an affiliate marketing business? Here are the 4 steps that I personally follow to start my own affiliate marketing business.
1. List Down Your Hobbies & Passions
This is something that you might already know. Try to list down at least 10 hobbies & passions. When you want to start doing something, you might want to do something that you really love.
In the affiliate marketing business, you’ll need to spend a lot of time to learn new things and writing a good content. So, spending time and writing on something that you don’t like makes you give up halfway. It is so much fun to do something that we love and make money from it.
It doesn’t mean that you need to start with something that you already like to do, if there is something that you want to try and willing to spend a lot of time to learn, you can start with that too.
Try to ask yourself with these questions:
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What magazines or news that you like to read?
- What organization or clubs that you involved with?
Every hobbies and passion that you’ll list down represent 1 niche. For example, the hobby is cycling around the town every evening. The niche is cycling. You can talk about cycling and selling cycling product in your affiliate marketing blog.
Well, you can say that each hobby and passion is equal to 1 niche.
Now, take out a piece of paper and a pen, list down 10 of your hobbies and passions.
2. What Problems You Can Solve
People buy a product because the product can solve their problem. So, what problem that you can solve within your niche? Each product that has been produced in this world are solving a few specific problems.
For example, Vivo NEX, a product in smartphones niche, has been produced to solve the communication problem between people. Honda City, a product in cars niche, has been produced to reduce time travel from one place to another.
Those products solve a big problem, that is why people keep buying them. But, even though you are trying to solve a small problem, you can make a fortune. Wireless mouse was invented to avoid problems with tangled wires. The problem with a wired mouse is the tangled wires, so wireless mouse has been created and people buy it.
Sometimes, you don’t really know what problem that people are facing in a certain niche. For example, you might don’t really care about wireless mouse because you’re totally okay with a wired mouse. But, some people have a problem with the wired mouse. So, you need to do some research to know what problem that you can solve within a certain niche.
Here how you can determine a problem:
- Have 1 on 1 conversation with someone in your niche. For example, you want to sell a woman’s bathrobe, you need to do some conversation with someone that might need it. In this case, of course, a woman.
- Learn from forums. You can research through Quora or other forums to identify the problem that people are facing. Sometimes they will complain about whatever product they buy.
- Research keywords. Do some keyword research through Google Instant and Jaaxy to identify the problem people searching on Google.
Now, you can list down the problem that people facing within a certain niche.
- Reading – people facing to find the best book to read
- Cooking – they don’t know the best recipe to cook a pizza
- Fishing – they don’t have a bait container to store fish bait when going to fishing
3. Competitor Research Through Google Search
Every business will have their own competition. This is because each business will keep improving to compete for each other to be the best in industry.
Same goes for affiliate marketing business. Most of the affiliate marketer using a blog to cater to their customer. When people searching for some information on a certain keyword, they will be served a lot of blog by Google and each blog is an affiliate marketing blog.
Let say you want to know the best smartphone money can buy in 2018, type in the keyword “best smartphone 2018”, Google shows thousands of results related to that keyword and the first page mostly blog.
When you open one of the blogs, you’ll find out that the blog is an affiliate marketing blog as soon as you saw Amazon or any affiliate link that redirect to the online marketplace.
And, all the blog on the first page competes for each other to be the first one since most people will click the first suggestion that Google serves. To compete with the harsh competition, they need to create high-quality content so that they can rank better in Google.
The example that I talked about is the competition of affiliate marketing in smartphone niche. You’ll do the same. To be the best in affiliate marketing in your specific niche, you need to deliver the high-quality content to your reader.
So, here are some tips that help you to identify you can compete with your competitor or not:
- Many competitors within your niche provide low – quality content
- Lack of transparency especially they don’t expose the bad side of some product. (all good reviews)
- Not many paid-advertising in your specific niche.
Take some time to do research. After doing some research, you’ll know which niche that you can focus on.
4. Profitability Of Your Selected Niche
After doing some research on the competitor, you might have 2 or 3 niches that low competition and good to get started with. Now, you need to make sure the niche that you’re trying to focus is profitable.
Even though the niche that you selected has low competition, you might not survive if that niche doesn’t give any money to you. This is most people fail. They want to start with so-called “untapped” market but at the end, they don’t make any money since no one buys the product in that niche.
How to determine a profitability of a niche?
- You can do research on Amazon. If there has a lot of product that related to your niche and has a high rating means your selected niche is profitable.
- If there has too few product or none, this is a bad sign which shows no one buys the product.
So, do some research on your own through Amazon to determine which niche is profitable. By now, I believe you have 1 or 2 niches that you can start with.
Now you have 1 or 2 niches that you want to focus with. Pick 1 of them because it is hard to focus 2 niches at the same time. If you have a problem to decide the best niche that you want to start, feel free to leave a comment below. I’m glad to help you.
Anyway, after doing niche picking through those steps, you’re a few steps ahead of your competitor. At least you know what to focus when doing affiliate marketing.
So, the next step to be successful in affiliate marketing is by creating a blog. Some people call it a website, others called it a blog. But, I personally called it a blog.
